Comparison of hypochlorous acid and common disinfectants

Hypochlorous acid is an endogenous substance of human body and safe for human body. Hypochlorous acid is used as a food additive in Japan and the United States, which shows its safety.

In the past, traditional disinfectants, such as 84 disinfectant, alcohol, peracetic acid, etc., were used for disinfection in food factories. These disinfectants not only had pungent smell, but also complicated operation, which greatly increased the time and workload of staff. As early as 2000, Electrolyzed Water as Disinfectant for Freshly Picked Vegetables was included in Food and Machinery, Journal of China Food Science and Technology Society. Since 2002, electrolyzed water has been included in the regulations on “food safety” promulgated by various countries in China, Japan and the United States, and actively promoted its application to the food processing industry.

The concept of electrolyzed water producing disinfectants or preservatives is attractive because electrolyzed water will revert to water after use without harming the environment. The pH value of the disinfectant produced during use is 5.0~6.5, and the disinfectant can effectively kill microorganisms within 5 minutes after being stored for 48 hours.

 

(2) Compliance
According to the national standard GB/T36758-2018, hypochlorous acid is the most widely used chlorine-containing disinfectant, which can be used for disinfection of object surfaces, air, fruits, vegetables and water.

It highlights that hypochlorous acid disinfectant can be used for disinfection of indoor air, surface of secondary water supply equipment, hands, skin and mucous membrane besides the efficacy of general chlorine disinfectant.

In 2020, the announcement of GB28234-2020 Safety and Health Standards for Acidic Oxidation Potentially Water Generators will be implemented:
It is determined that it can be used in the fields of disinfection of medical instruments and articles, disinfection of hands and skin mucosa, disinfection of tableware and fruits and vegetables, etc. In 2018, slightly acidic hypochlorous acid water was introduced on the basis of this standard. In addition to the above applications, the disinfection application of electrolyzed water to the waterway of oral comprehensive treatment platform was also included.
