Hypochlorous acid —— a new type of eye care solution

Jul11,24

The human body has five features, five features refers to the eyes, mouth, ears, nose, throat, the five features of the human body in the mind, all occupy an important position. No matter which organ is sick, it will cause great harm to people, so we must pay attention to protect and cherish them, as important as protecting our heart.

As the window of our hearts, the eyes always shine with the brilliance of wisdom, keen and meticulous, and the visual observation of the world can’t be separated from it, so it is necessary to take special care of them to avoid the trouble of eye diseases.

Eye diseases, in the 1960s, one of the most important infectious corneal diseases is bacterial keratitis, and is increasing, and opportunistic infections, mixed infections and drug-resistant bacterial infections are its development trend, in the diagnosis and treatment has brought certain difficulties, must be highly vigilant and attention.

After 1970s, viral keratitis, fungal keratitis and acanthamoeba keratitis are increasing rapidly, but bacterial keratitis is still the highest incidence and blindness rate of infectious keratitis.

1.Conventional treatment of bacterial keratitis

Topical antibiotics, such as levofloxacin eye drops, are currently the main treatment for bacterial corneal ulcers. However, studies have shown that long-term, large-scale local use of antibiotic eye drops can cause a variety of ocular surface and corneal damage, mainly manifested as corneal epithelial exfoliation, tear film stability decline, corneal sensitivity decline, corneal nerve damage, etc. At the same time, clinical also often see poor response to antibiotic treatment, persistent ulcer, and even corneal perforation cases. Therefore, it is also necessary to find safer and more effective treatment means.

2.Hypochlorous acid(anolyte) eye drops treatment of bacterial corneal ulcer research experiment

In 2019, Wang Fan et al., Department of Ophthalmology, Affiliated Hospital of Xuzhou Medical University, conducted a “clinical analysis of 0.01% hypochlorous acid local eye drops in the treatment of bacterial corneal ulcer.”

A total of 60 cases and 60 eyes of patients with bacterial corneal ulcer treated in the ophthalmology department of the Affiliated Hospital of Xuzhou Medical University from August to December 2018 were randomly divided into 2 groups. In the conventional treatment group, 30 cases and 30 eyes were treated with levofloxacin eye drops; in the combined treatment group, 0.01% neutral anolyte aqueous solution was added to the conventional treatment for local eye drops. The therapeutic effects of the two groups were observed and compared.

The results showed that the healing time of the combined treatment group was significantly shorter than that of the conventional treatment group (P = 0.05), but there was no difference in the cure rate (P = 0.0643) and the best corrected visual acuity (P = 0.0787) between the two groups. There was no difference in the incidence of iridocyclitis between the two groups (P = 0.0643). There were no corneal perforation, corneal neovascularization and other complications in the two groups, and there were no obvious corneal irritation symptoms in the combined treatment group when 0.01% clean anolyte was used.

A: Corneal confocal microscopy before treatment showed a large number of acute inflammatory cell infiltration, without mycelium and amoeba structure;

B: OCT images of the anterior segment before treatment suggested that the depth of corneal infiltration was about the medial stroma.

C, D: Before treatment, slit-lamp photography showed a round ulcer lesion in the cornea nasalis near the pupil, with a diameter of about 4mm, and positive fluorescein staining. E, F: Treatment with 3d slit lamp photography, ulcer area decreased, corneal edema reduced;

G, H: After 6 days of treatment, slit-lamp photography showed that the ulcer had healed and fluorescein staining was negative.

According to the above experiments, hypochlorous acid/clean anolyte combined therapy has a shorter treatment cycle, no obvious complications, and no obvious symptoms of eye irritation.  Bluewav’s hypochlorous acid solution helps patients heal their corneal epithelium faster and restore vision faster. Chemical anolyte has a good application prospect in the treatment of corneal ulcer.

3.Hypochlorous acid(anolyte)solution for the treatment of acanthamoeba keratitis

Acanthamoeba is a protozoa parasite that causes serious diseases in human beings. Recent studies on clean anolyte solution show that it has a rapid killing effect on different kinds of microorganisms and can also be used as a therapeutic agent for acanthamoeba infection.

I.YILDIZ et al from Adnan Mendres University in Turkey studied the effect of clean anolyte solution on acanthamoeba.

Fig Effects of HOCl at different exposure times on Acanthamoeba

Studies have shown that the mortality rate of 200ppm hypochlorous acid solution to acanthamoeba reached 96% and 84% at 90 minutes (dilution of 1/2 and 1/4, respectively). The lethal effect of hypochlorous acid solution on acanthamoeba was dose-dependent and time-dependent.

A: Control group, the presence of parasites;

B: Influence of anolyte solution with 1/2 dilution rate on acanthamoeba at 0 minutes; Death patterns of parasites stained with trypan blue;

C: Dying and surviving parasite forms at the same dilution ratio

It can be seen from the above experiments that hypochlorous acid solution can treat eye infections because of its high safety performance, and may become a new drug to treat parasites and infections because of its effective diluting properties.

4.Other applications of hypochlorous acid(anolyte) in eye care

(1) Some foreign teams have used chemical anolyte to treat fungal infection after Boston type 1 artificial cornea surgery, and achieved good results.

(2) Disinfection of POvidone-iodine conjunctival sac can significantly reduce postoperative complications of cataract infection. Studies have shown that disinfection with hypochlorous acid aqueous solution can also effectively kill bacteria in conjunctival sac and reduce the occurrence of povidone-iodine-related eye complications such as corneal epithelial injury.

(3) In terms of eye medication safety, animal experiments showed that no symptoms of eye irritation occurred when hypochlorite aqueous solution with a concentration of 0.01%, 0.03%, and 0.01% was used for local eye drops.

According to the above studies and experiments, clean anolyte, as a new type of eye care solution, plays an important role in the treatment and care of the eyes.

Bluewav’s hypochlorous acid solution has the following advantages in the treatment of eye diseases.

  1. non-toxic
  2. 100% safe.
  3. Bluewav’s hypochlorous acid solution can quickly eliminate some eye bacteria with30seconds, promoting eye recovery.
